"I picked up the book because I love dragon fantasy... the action/adventure type. While this book does have a sentient dragon, she doesn't appear much in the story.
The book is definitely not a standard book. It really focuses on angels and demons, but has a story that is very unique. There are two main realms in the 'lower planes' as I like to think of them (where humans live). One of light and one of death. Apparently they used to both be about the same, but then the realms were sealed from each other and one started practicing dark magic and worshiping demons and devils while the other practiced light magic and worshiped angels and dragons.
The main character is a girl who according to prophecy will be the one who essentially destroys the evil threatening everyone. Her sister/twin is the one at the head of this evil. You could say they're both different sides to a coin. Born the same, but one given to light, one given to dark. The main character led a sheltered life not knowing who she was or what she was one day supposed to do. She believed she was normal like all the other Light witches/wizards she grew up with, except that she was always more powerful than the rest. Because her sister was fostered by the dark, she grew up knowing what she was and could do and was taught how to control her power much earlier on. Essentially her dark sister had a head start growing up and the balance of power has shifted to evil/dark.
I found rating this book to be hard. If you asked me to rate it after reading the first 10-20 chapters, I might rate it as a 2.5. If you asked me to rate it after the end, I'd rate it a 4.5. The beginning of the book was slow and I wasn't sure if I wanted to keep reading. This is partly because, like I mentioned earlier, the plot is unique and the author created a story where you don't already have a sense of whats going to happen. Usually when you read a book, you read the description first to see if it's something you might enjoy. Usually from that, you can guess what the overall shape of the story will be like... For example, girl meets guy who is a vampire and then end up falling in love or a young peasant learns he was adopted and has magical powers which he uses to defeat an evil army rising up against the kingdom. Anyhow, because of the unique plot, a lot of new twists and turns were introduced and it was hard to tell if it's a going to be good story or if it will fizzle out early on.
It seemed like the last 25% of the book really picked up the pace though and got interesting. I this this deserves a 3.5 with high hopes for the sequel, but I think it I'll rate it a 4 because I realize its a series and each book doesn't follow an individual arc. I don't know overall know how this story yet will play out but it definitely has a good direction to it."
